Chilcott "A Little Jazz Mass" & Haydn "Kleine Orgelmesse"

  • St. Louis Cathedral 615 Pere Antoine Alley New Orleans, LA, 70116 United States (map)

Join us for Bob Chilcott's A Little Jazz Mass and Haydn's Missa Brevis (Little Organ Mass) with the Cathedral Festival Chorus, Magnolia Chamber Orchestra, and esteemed soprano soloist Christina Casey, led by guest conductor Alan Raines. This concert is free and open to the public.

One of Chilcott's most celebrated and popular choral works to date, A Little Jazz Mass has received countless performances (both in concert and as part of the sung liturgy in church services) across the world, perhaps most notably at St Paul's Cathedral, London. Chilcott's A Little Jazz Mass is a highly original and effective concert setting of the Latin Missa brevis in which the various movements embrace a variety of jazz styles. Chilcott's jazz influences truly come to the form in A Little Jazz Mass: The Kyrie has real groove, the Gloria swings, the Sanctus sits right back, the Benedictus hums along, and the Agnus Dei draws inspiration from the Blues.

Written around 1775, Haydn's Missa Brevis (short mass) features soprano soloist, four-part mixed choir, two violins, organ and bass, it is known as the Kleine Orgelsolomesse (Little Organ Mass) due to its extended organ solo in the Benedictus movement.

Don't miss an evening of masterworks at St. Louis Cathedral, one of New Orlean's most notable landmarks!

This concert is free and open to the public. Free-will donations are encouraged. Seating is General Admission. You may extend this invitation to all members of your organization and their guests.
